Sony Begins Shipping $499 Blu-ray Disc Player
Sony said this morning that its new $499 Blu-ray Disc player is now shipping to retailers around the country. The BDP-S300 utilizes HDMI to showcase 1080p HD video content while delivering new features including the advanced Dolby(R) Digital Plus audio codec as well as BRAVIA Theatre Sync and CD playback.

What's the point of spending anything for a DVD player that might be obsolete in 2 years. There is no way I'd even consider a Blu-Ray right now. If Sony agreed to cross licence their discs on both formats, I'd encourage people to upgrade, but until the studios are willing to guarantee that consumers won't be left with bad hardware, I see no reason for anyone to make the upgrade. If Sony is serious about wanting to see Blu-Ray take off, they'd let consumers decide which product was superior, instead of making them choose between formats.
