Samsung to Intro Dual-Format Blu-ray HD DVD

Samsung Electronics said today that it will support Blu-ray as well as HD DVD and plans to launch a dual-format player in time for the Christmas holiday shopping season.
Samsung has been selling Blu-ray players since last year and despite Blu-ray's sales dominance in the initial months, Samsung apparently decided to hedge its bets and support both formats.

Perhaps the fact that rival LG Electronics intro'd its dual-format Blu-ray HD DVD player in January and began selling it last month had something to do with it...

Everytime I see another dual HD player out there, it upsets me because the solution to this problem isn't the CE manufacturers maintaining a neutral environment, it should be the content owners who have to compromise.

If there was a good technological reason for why a Sony film couldn't be licensed on an HD-DVD or why an Universal film couldn't be licensed on a Blu-ray, then I'd understand why this product is necessary, but if you ask me, I think it sucks that consumers are having to pay for both players, just so that the studios can make more money.

The more that the world moves digital, the more fair use rights we have given up and now it's at a point where technology is being held back because the studios want to monopolize the distribution methods for film. Consumers would be well served to skip this dual player, instead of paying up for the content owner's greed.
