Panasonic & Hitachi in Plasma Deal

Leading plasma display manufacturers Matsushita (parent company of Panasonic) and Hitachi said today that they have formed a venture that will enable them to supply each other with very large plasma panels. Under terms of the alliance, Matsushita/Panasonic will supply Hitachi with 103-inch panels while Hitachi will sell its 85-inch panels to Matsushita/Panasonic.

An interesting trend towards cooperation has developed recently among HDTV manufacturers you would ordinarily think of as competitors. LG and Samsung announced a similar initiative last week, while LCD makers Sony and Samsung have been in cohoots for some time now. LG and Philips also collaborated to form LG.Philips LCD Co.

With flat-panel TV prices falling as much as they have over the last few years, it's really no wonder that companies like these feel forced to get in bed together. Call it a marriage of convenience, or perhaps survival...
